A TreeVitalize Grant was awarded on July 15, 2014 in the amount of $8,530 to plant 60 trees at Kishacoquillas Park. In 2012, over 200 trees had to be removed from the park due to an infestation of the emerald ash borer. The Township pursued the grant in 2014 to help replace the many trees that were removed from the Park, especially in the Campground area.
TreeVitalize is a DCNR partnership to restore tree cover in PA communities. The Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, Bureau of Forestry, has partnered with the PA Urban & Community Forestry Council, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to offer community tree planting & tree inventory opportunities throughout the state.
In addition to the help from the state agencies, Derry Township established a Tree Committee comprised of local community members including a Penn State professor of forestry, zoning board member, a state forester, tree farmers and other concerned citizens that dedicated their time to help Township staff implement a tree planting and preservation plan for Kishacoquillas Park.
The Township would like to reach out to community organizations who are willing to help with ongoing care of the newly planted trees. If your organization would like to help, please call the Derry Township office at 717-248-8151.
